Why Is My Water Heater Making Noise?
Popping or rumbling from a tank water heater usually means sediment. Minerals in the water settle at the bottom of the tank, trap water underneath and make it pop as it boils through the layer.
A high-pitched whine can come from a partly closed valve, and ticking is often just pipes expanding as hot water moves through them.
Sediment shortens the life of the tank and wastes energy. If the noise is new, or you see water around the base of the heater, have it checked.
